Autoradiography involves incorporating a radioactive label into a substance and then placing the radioactive substance in contact with a photographic emulsion. Since the radioactive emissions expose the emulsion, the radioactive substance “takes a picture of itself”. That is why we call this process autoradiography. Jonin Cairns exploited this technique in the early 1960′s to investigate the replication of the E. coli chromosome.
