1. What is the structure of Lysosome? Indicate its functions?
Ans. Structure: (i) Rounded or Battery like vesicular structure, 0.2 µm- 0.8 µm in diameter, (ii) Covered with trilayered (P-L-P) unit membrane, (iii) The matrix contains about 50 kinds of Hydrolytic enzymes, as well as myelin fibres of undigested fat.
Functions:
(i) Intracellular digestion
(ii) Destruction of nonfunctional cellular organelles, toxic substances and germs.
(iii) Aids in the rupture of egg-envelopes during fertilization.
(iv) Destruction of cell organelles during development.
2. What is suicidal bag? Why is it so called?
Ans. Lysosome is known as suicidal bag. It contains more than 50 Hydrolytic enzymes. These are used in intracellular digestion, destruction of non functional organelles, germs, etc. Their autolytic activities often result in the destruction of their own cell. Due to this attribute Lysosome is called suicidal bag.
